We bought our first bull from Robert Needham, whose long-established herd was recorded in the 11th volume of the Red Lincoln herd book over 100 years ago. This bull arrived in 2007 to start the Yarn Hill herd, after the farm’s water meadows were restored to grass and the perfect conditions had been created.
Our cattle spend most of the year grazing these marshlands by the River Alde, moving upland to sandier fields with a sheltered straw bed area in the winter months. In their large and lush pastures as well as their free-draining winter fields, Yarn Hill Lincoln Reds enjoy a natural, peaceful life. Cattle roam freely in family groups, and weaning only takes place when calves have outgrown their mothers, avoiding stress.
Animal welfare is paramount for Natasha, who is responsible for the management and daily stock tasks of the Yarn Hill herd.
“Lincoln Reds are easy-going by nature, and the calm and consistent life we give them makes them relaxed and friendly, and a pleasure to handle.”
At the time of slaughter, Natasha avoids stressing her contented cattle by using a local family-run abattoir just 28 miles away, keeping the journey time from the farm to a minimum. At RSPCA assured C & K Meats, owner Kevin Burrows ensures all animals are treated kindly and with respect, as noted when C & K Meats were presented with a BQP Welfare Award for outstanding work for animal welfare in lairage before slaughter.
Contented animals protected from stress produce the highest quality meat, and Yarn Hill Lincoln Red beef is renowned for its texture and taste. Slow-grown pasture-fed rare breed beef is a world apart from mass-produced meat, and Yarn Hill Lincoln Red beef, with its fine marbling, is tender, succulent and deliciously flavourful.
Natasha started showing her pedigree cattle in 2015, winning the show champion award at the Essex Show. In 2016, Natasha’s cattle won the Tollemache Trophy at the Suffolk Show, the Skeggles Trophy at the Royal Norfolk Show and the junior reserve champion award at the Lincolnshire Show.
In 2017, Yarn Hill Lincoln Reds’ prizes included Breed Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, Reserve Breed Champion award at the Essex show, Breed Champion at the Suffolk Show, and Reserve Breed Champion Male at the Lincoln Show. A heifer Yarn Hill sold also won Breed Champion and Reserve Inter Breed at the Norfolk show, as well as Inter Breed Champion at the Wayland Show.
